This month I wanted to highlight a few local amazing artist
that I have had the pleasure of working with an I admire them artistically and professionally.
Niki Gulley, Misty Oliver-Foster, Dawn Waters Baker.

Niki Gulley

Niki is an amazing landscape, nature and still life artist, she paints in oil, acrylic, watercolor and
pastel. Niki is also a great art instructor, who conducts workshops in Texas, New Mexico and Italy. I had a great time with Niki in September of 2011 during her plein aire workshop in Tuscany, Italy! Niki and I are featured in -"Today's best floral and botanical artists"- issue of the American Art Collector Magazine -March 2012

Misty Oliver-Foster

I have worked along side Misty on numerous occasions in Frisco, Texas. Misty is the former president of the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco where I served for 2yrs as secretary. Misty and I recently completed a public art project for Newman Village and we displayed our artwork during the month of February in the Iconic Love Art Experience. This project was the concept of Scott Trent. Stop by Newman Village and see each of our 6 ft. paintings on the Plaza lawn. Misty Oliver-Foster is also one of the 109 finalists selected for the 2012 Hunting Art Prize. This prestigious award is one of the most generous art award in the US an it's given to one finalist. Misty's artwork shown above will be featured at a gala in Houston on April 28. The Winning artist will be announced at the gala in Houston!! Good Luck to my dear friend Misty!!

Dawn Waters Baker

Dawn Waters Baker and I belong to several organizations together, we are members of The Artist Of Texas and The Faith Artist. Dawn paints the most amazing skyscapes and spiritual artwork! Her artwork takes you to a place of tranquility and peace. Dawn has such a quiet and humble spirit for someone who can express God's gift with such proficiency and Power! Dawn is my guiding light and spiritual art muse!!

Dawn and I will display our artwork together during Artscape in the Arboretum on March 16th, 17th and 18th, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 2012. Dallas Arboretum (during the Dallas Blooms)8525 Garland Rd., Dallas, TX 75218.

This exhibit is a prelude to the
2012 Art In The Square Festival.
I will have two works of art displayed on the 2nd floor lobby
of the City of Southlake Town Hall building. This is my first year
participating in the City of Southlake Town Hall exhibit and I am very excited
to have artwork alongside such great artist as:
Gregory Arth, Betty Nash and more.

Iconic Love Exhibit

A collection of my artwork representing Objects of Iconic Love.

I will have artwork on display at (2) venues in Frisco during February (the month of love).
As part of the Frisco Art Experience I will display my artwork along side three other artists: Misty Oliver Foster, T.Scott Stromberg, Scott Trent.

Each artist will interpret what Iconic Love means to them. I have chosen to paint several new painting of red roses, mother and child nurturing love, leading us along the pathway to home.
I had a great time painting for this project because it was another excuse for me to use RED!
I often use splashes of red in my paintings in order to make things pop. This time there was no holding back, several all red compositions in this exhibit, as well as a few with red sprinkled throughout the painting.
For each exhibit, I included floral pastel paintings and still life watercolor and a large figurative acrylic painting.

Newman Village, Darling Holmes have commissioned Myself and Misty and T. Scott to create a 6ft X 4ft painting that will be installed outdoors on a 8ft easel at Newman Village Plaza. On Sunday, February 12, 2012 we will unveil each painting followed by a brief artist talk. The remainder of the day will include: face painting, balloon artist, children's theater and more.

"Purity" is the the sister painting to "Unforgettable"!
This piece is framed in black on black that makes the white tulip
POP! I am working on a series of white flowers right now, attempting
to achieve the same quality and style without my usual bold color.
It is very tempting for me to want to add just a dab of color.
But my art critique and husband is close by to make sure I
don't venture off into my color obsession!!

Ok!, after painting the pastel "Purity", I had to
balance and get to that familiar comfort zone in a
sea of COLOR!! This time I needed lots of color and
patterns and texture with just a hint of white for your eye
to rest! I really enjoyed capturing the refection of the
cloth pattern on the white bowl. It felt great to splash around with watercolor again.
While painting this artwork, I discovered that I still love watercolor
just as much as my pastel painting.

I have noticed that this week I have painted
several food related paintings!

Citation Reception

My painting, "Submerged" is a juried finalist in the 2011 Citation Exhibit.

I was not one of the award winners on Saturday night, but I was fortunate in another way.

I was very fortunate to meet an upcoming artist, Sana Brown.

Her artwork titled, " The Coat of Many Colors" won

The Golden Paints Merchandise Award.

The quality of artwork and caliber of artist in the exhibit was outstanding.

A few of my favorite artist in this exhibit are: Nuray Fuller, Misty Oliver Foster,

Carmen Lax, Jan Partin and Douglas Winters.

The CityArtCal opening reception was a big success, a special thanks to The Kitchen Source for providing the exhibit space and allowing local artist to display their artwork! Andrea Davis did and outstanding job with organizing and overseeing the publishing of this years artist calendar!

The 2012 Fine Art in Dallas is a 128-page engagement book with 100 color plates of original art of 72 artists from the Greater Dallas area. A portion of the sales of this keepsake book goes to fund art programs for local schools.

The Artists of Texas, a juried group of Texas-based painters, is conducting its third-annual Artists of Texas show at the Dutch Art Gallery in Lake Highlands through the end of December.

Several of the artists, including Kay Wyne, Niki Gulley and founding member Debbie Grayson hail from the Lake Highlands area. More than 60 artists are represented in this month’s exhibit and sale, including prize-winning 12-year old artist Anton Zhou.

The Dutch Art Gallery, located in Northlake Shopping Center at Northwest Highway and Ferndale, has been a fine-art fixture in our neighborhood for 46 years. For more information, contact the gallery at 214.348.7350.

I attended The Spirit of Texas reception at The Dutch Art Gallery on Saturday! The quality of artwork was amazing!!! As a new member of the Artist Of Texas I was humbled by the opportunity to display 6 pieces of my watercolor paintings alongside so many accomplished artist. The gallery was buzzing with art collectors, individual artists' experiences, laughter, eating and of course sales, sales and more sales!

I did not get a chance to meet every artist but I am proud to have spent time getting to know;

Debbie Lincoln, a fabulous oil painter and business woman with a contagious smile(we usually communicate via Internet)!, Gwen Bell who paints meticulous detailed cups/mugs, still life in oil on small canvases, Pat Meyer a still life and floral oil painter - a southern belle with a hearty laugh!, Dawn Waters Baker who paints the most beautiful sky scapes I have ever seen, Sheri Jones another great oil painter who painted boots and old trucks, and Anton Zhou the youngest member of the group

who is a teenager (12 or 13yrs old), but paints like a master oil painter!, Carol Henry, Martie Rains, and Barbara Haviland. We art fortunate to have a place like The Dutch Art Gallery her in Dallas that provides Beautiful Original artwork, and custom Framing! So, Please take time to stop by the Dutch art Gallery and say, "Hi" to Pamela Massar (General Manager) and her family

Award Winning Pastel!

Frisco Texas artist Barbara J. Mason is named on of the top prize winners in the Pastel Society of America (PSA) Annual Pastels Only Exhibit. Barbara's Pastel artwork "Strawberry Fusion is the recipient of the prestigious Yang Family Award.
A primary mandate of the Pastel Society of America is to provide a forum for the exhibition of works by the most accomplished of pastel artists in the U.S. and abroad. The Annual Open Juried Exhibition for Pastels Only is held during the month of September in the main gallery of the National Arts Club, a historic mansion located in the Gramery Park area of Manhattan. The annual "Pastels Only" Exhibit is now in it's 39th year. Accepted entries usually number 170 to 200 pastels out of more than 2,000 entries. Prizes amounting to over $25,00 in both cash and pastel materials are presented at a special awards ceremony. The exhibition, the culmination of PSA activities of the year, acknowledges the professional excellence of participating artists and helps promote the finest examples of pastel to the general public, the professional art world, art students and art collectors.

Barbara's artwork "Strawberry Fusion, is a vibrant and bold still life painting depicting lush red strawberries surrounded by photo realistic bubbles that contain reflecting vignettes of miniature strawberries.

Barbara is not a newcomer to fine art competitions, her work, "56 Oldsmobile" was awarded the Holbein Merchandise Award at the Southwest Watercolor Society, which is a annual competition open to all water media artist internationally. She has recently had her work in The American Art Collector Magazine (September 2011 issue). In addition to creating vibrant beautiful, figurative,still life, and floral pastel paintings, Barbara is an accomplished watercolor artist with artwork in private and corporate collections across the country and abroad.

Plein Aire Painting From Italy

I am back from Italy!! I was blessed to paint from Pienza, to Matepulciano to siena to Florence
to Umbria to Rome and everything in between! What an artful experience.
I will share my completed painting with you very soon!

Shortly after returning back to the United States I was off on to another art road trip .

KEEL-BILLED TOUCAN

of a Keel-billed Toucan, this is the national bird of Belize.

I'm feeling "Tropical" in the studio this weekend! Maybe it's the Texas heat!

My mind has transformed the Texas heat into a more tropical climate.

The weather reminds me of our recent trip to Belize.

This Boot Bag was for a Artist Gift exchange. The project challenge was to get creative with

your gift wrapping! I used newspaper inserts and recycled paper.

I re-discovered how nice it is to create without boundries or rules. But, isn't that

the way art was intended to be......

Strawberry N Cream Swirl Rose

New Rose Pastel Painting! This is a painting of a soft cream and strawberry rose at
Greenview nursery in Springfield, Illinois. Pastels allow me to capture the soft creamy petals
of this rose. I painted this picture with my good friend Marla and her mother Jean in mind.
Jean loved soft colors almost white! Well Jean I'm getting there. I working my way toward a
piece of artwork in her memory! Titled: "Amazing Grace". I'm learning to incorporate creams
and white flowers that stay true to my style of bold painting! Not easy, but I'm up for the challenge!!

Past- els to Present

Past-els (Past) to Present , I am reflecting back on some of my earlier work in this post. I painted these morning glories in watercolor but I was not truely satisfied with the background. After success with "Before the Dance" background painting, I thought I would re-work or soften up this background as well. I used Rembrant, Schmincke, and Sennelier soft pastel sticks to create soft background. I recently learned that this technique is called "bokeh". In photography, bokeh is the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur,

in out-of-focus areas of an image, or "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points .

I like the contrast of sharp edges and soft midtones

that this technique adds to my paintings.

I also added a few more dew drops and enhanced the existing water droplets.

This image of morning glories was captured early in the morning , just before opening.
With the red orange and yellow flowers un-opened, the resemble chilli peppers!

Back in the Studio with Pastels

Well, It has been very busy over the last few months. I was fortunate to win Best In Show at Frisco Art Discovery Center Art exhibit in October. I created over 15 new pastel pieces for this show! The hard work paid off!
I'm learning more about pastels each day! The pure pigment colors are awesome, if you don't mind the dust, I woud recommend giving them a try.

Today's artwork is a pastel and color pencil piece that I started in July. The title: Before the Dance" is a piece that took me awhile to figure out the background design. The young lady in this painting was about to perform a dance at the park. She is sitting down gathering her thoughts or concentrating just before the dance. I edited out the group of people that were standing around her waiting for the perfomance. I placed her in a peaceful and soft surrounding that I imaged best suited her poise.

Exploring with Pastel

After trying colored pencil, I thought I would give pastel painting a try. There were a few pastel pencils mixed in with colored pencils, so I though , "why not"? I like the softness of pastels. Blending was a bit tricky and so was producing fine lines with a fat pastel stick. With a few home made tools and a lot of patience, I was off to my first pastel painting, titled: "Pink Glow". Before The Dance: colored pencil

My next attempt was a little more challenging. I started with a figurative colored pencil drawing. This is a drawing of a young lady that was performing in the park in Decatur, Illinois. My husband and I caught her just before her performance was to begin. She was sitting on a bench in the shade. I image she was performing the dance in her mind, thinking out each move as the music played in her head. She was young but there was a gracefulness and sense of poise that drew us in. This piece is not yet completed I still need to do the background. Maybe a few soft trees iin the distance to balance the cast shadows of the trees on her back? We will see. Stay posted....

More Colored Pencil

This is a blast from the past! This drawing reminds me of my gradmother. Glass candy in

those fancy cut glass candy jars on the coffee table in the living room. Soooo.. tempting, but

sad it's all glass. It screams "look but don't touch"! I found a few pieces at an estate auction, I couldn't help

myself. I had to buy them for old times sake!!!

Getting Started

Hey Everyone!!

Well here it is! I have wanted to start an art blog page for some time now.

I finally got the courage to sit down and just do it! :)

I want to share with you my new art work. I have started color pencil drawing

and pastel painting. I am still learning and exploring new techiques, while figuring

out which supplies work best for me. This all started when my mother came to visit.

I dug out my unused supply of colored pencils for her to use. She likes to paint and draw

early morning outside on the porch with her morning beverage. I sat down

beside her one morning and gave colored pencils a try. Now I'm hooked!

The first colored pencil drawing was of a red bing cherry! Whenever I want
to get motivated I usually start with something I love! I love to paint and use red as
much as possible. Bing cherries come easy for me to draw. Maybe because
I've drawn so many of them by now!

My next attempt was a little more challenging.

I started with a still life drawing of a white rose.

I wanted to make the white rose glow. I blended white, cream and yellow to soften petals.

I have not experimented with background as of yet. Keeping the background black gives

me that high contrast affect.
